Rains Lash Parts Of J&K, Higher Regions Likely To Witness Snowfall

The director of the Meteorological Department in the Union Territory Sonam Lotus said several regions including Srinagar and Jammu, received rain since early morning.

Rains lashed parts of Jammu and Kashmir  Saturday, bringing the day temperature down by several degrees, reported news agency PTI. A weather official here said another spell of wet weather is likely to start early next week. The director of the Meteorological Department in the Union Territory Sonam Lotus said several regions including Srinagar and Jammu, received rain since early morning, as reported by PTI.

He further said the weather will remain as such till the evening and the temperature will fall about five to six degrees. Lotus revealed there will be some respite and the weather will improve on Sunday.

“But, there is a possibility of rain in the evening at some places,” said the director, as mentioned in the PTI report. He also added that the higher reaches could receive snowfall. Although there is no prediction of heavy rain and snowfall.

Lotus said the weather will remain inconsistent till April 6. He added it will see some improvements after the first week of this month and the temperatures will also go up.

He further informed that a western difference will affect Jammu and Kashmir from April 3 to April 6. This will lead to multiple places experiencing light to moderate intermittent rainfall.

Meanwhile, snowfall also means a lot of local recreation for people. For instance, on February 4 this year, a story of true dedication emerged from the remote town of Beerwah in Budgam, Jammu and Kashmir where young girls used to practice martial arts in the snow due to the lack of indoor facilities in the area.

No hurdle seemed to bother the girls who were driven by their passion for the game and representing India at the national level.

"We don't have indoor practice facilities. But our passion is so strong that we' practise even in snow. We want to represent India, Kashmir and make our parents proud," said Muskan, one of the girls practising the sport said to news agency ANI.

The girls were seen practising barefoot in thick snow, wearing their martial arts attire.

Their coach Sujat told ANI that heavy snowfall in the region did not deter his students from practising as they called him up and asked him to carry on with his coaching schedule as usual. He also said that the students are talented and want to see them perform for India at the national level.

Sujat has urged the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha to provide the players with training facilities so that they don't lag behind.

"It snowed heavily yesterday but several girls called me up & said they want to practice even in snow. They said they don't want to lag behind. We have to take our children to int'l platforms & Olympics. I request LG for facilities for them. They are practising in the snow",  Sujat told ANI.
