Onion Prices: ‘I Don't Eat Onion,’ Says Sitharaman; Congress Stages Protest In Parliament
Congress president Sonia Gandhi will also be a part of the demonstration, which will be held in the Parliament's premises by Congress MPs.
New Delhi: Within a span of four months, the price of onions has skyrocketed from Rs 20 to Rs 150 per kg, making it the most expensive item on the common man’s plate. Due to shortage in its supply, the prices of edible bulbs has breached the Rs 100 border in many states. In Delhi-NCR the retail price of onion is in Rs 80-120 range.
Congress MPs to protests over the issue:
Congress MPs of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha today staged protest in the Parliament’s premises, against the government over increasing onion prices. Former Union Minister P Chidambaram also took part in the protest. The party may also raise the issue of onions in the Parliament today

Govt taking steps to control onion prices: Sitharaman
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday said that the government has taken a host of measures, including imports, to deal with the rising prices of onions and there are several structural issues related to their storage which the government is trying to address.
"Steps are being taken other than procurement," she told Lok Sabha while replying to the debate on Supplementary Demands for Grants for 2019-20 where she also said export of onions have been banned and tender have been floated for its import.
I don’t eat much of onion: Sitharaman
Sitharaman that she doesn't eat much of onion or garlic and hails from a family where these two vegetables are not much in use.
Her remarks about personal eating habits came while responding to interruptions by some opposition members at a time when she was speaking on the onion issue.
"I don't eat much of onion-garlic. I come from such a family which doesn't have much to do with onion", she said.
