The latest test mules of Mahindra’s upcoming sub-4 metre SUV, codenamed the S201, have received production-spec parts with minimal camouflage. Here are some interesting details revealed by the latest spy shots

  • The Mahindra S201 will have rear disc brakes. If Mahindra offers it as standard, the S201 will become the third vehicle in the sub-Rs 10 lakh bracket to feature rear disc brakes alongside the Maruti Suzuki S-Cross and the Baleno RS

  • The S201 will have Mahindra’s latest grille design with the diamond stud pattern first seen on the XUV500 facelift
  • The S201’s wheels feature five lug nuts, which isn't common in cars priced under Rs 10 lakh. Only one of its rivals, the Vitara Brezza, gets five locking nuts, while all the others feature four. A five-nut setup is generally used on heavier cars. However, it doesn’t have any significant benefits over having just four nuts

Under the skin, the S201 is essentially a SsangYong Tivoli, which was first showcased in the country at the 2016 Auto Expo. In fact, the basic shell of the S201 appears to be pretty identical to that of the Tivoli.

Expected Prices

The prices of most offerings in the sub-4 metre SUV segment range from as low as Rs 6 lakh and goes to up to Rs 12 lakh. The Mahindra S201 is expected to be priced within this range and it will go up against other sub-compact SUVs such as the Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, the Ford EcoSport and its body-on-frame sibling, the Mahindra TUV300.

We expect Mahindra to discontinue the NuvoSport, which is essentially an updated version of the Quanto, to make way for the upcoming S201. Since January 2018, Mahindra has only managed to sell five units of the NuvoSport, which is priced between Rs 7.77 lakh - 10.25 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
