Kannur Train Fire: Youth Taken Into Custody For Attempting To Set Moving Train Ablaze

A Railway official said, "As it was an attempt, no one was injured. The man appeared to be mentally unsound."

The railway security officials took a 20-year-old youngster from Maharashtra into custody for trying to set Kannur-Ernakulam Intercity Express on fire on Monday. The incident reportedly took place after the train left Koyilandy station at around 4.15 pm.

According to PTI, both Railway Protection Force and Railway Police officials confirmed about the incident in Kannur-Ernakulam Intercity Express. However, they refused to specify whose custody the man was kept in.

On Monday, the accused entered the train and started tearing the instruction posters and then reportedly attempted to set the train on fire. The passengers who panicked by his act immediately caught him and handed him over to the railway officials.

A Railway official told PTI, "As it was an attempt, no one was injured. The man appeared to be mentally unsound."

They also said that the fire was averted due to the alertness of the passengers.

In the past two months, two train arson incidents have been reported in Kerala. In the first incident, three passengers including a baby died in the train fire. However, in the second arson major mishap was averted since it took place in a stationary train.

In the first incident, three persons died and nine suffered injuries after accused Shahrukh Saifi set his co-passengers on fire on Alappuzha-Kannur Executive Express train. Later, Shahrukh Saifi was nabbed in Maharashtra.

On June 1, an accused set fire to a coach of the same stationary express train at Kannur railway station in the early hours. The police and fire personnel immediately rushed to the spot and put out the fire. Later, the accused was nabbed with the help of CCTV footage of a petrol bunk near the railway station.
