The Delhi Police has registered a case following a serious cyber fraud incident involving the WhatsApp account of Lakshmi Puri, the wife of Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and former Assistant Secretary-General at the United Nations. The complaint, submitted by Mahesh Chawla, Additional Private Secretary at the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, outlines that the cyber breach occurred on the evening of May 1, 2025.

According to officials, Lakshmi Puri received a message from a known contact, Mala Thapar, asking for a one-time password (OTP), which she unknowingly shared. This act gave the attacker unauthorised access to her WhatsApp account.

Following the breach, the compromised account was used to send deceptive messages to several of Puri’s contacts, soliciting money. Among the recipients of these fraudulent messages were several diplomats and high-ranking individuals, raising concerns of a larger security breach.

The case has been formally registered at the Cyber Police Station in New Delhi. Senior officers, including the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) and Joint Commissioner, have been briefed on the matter and an investigation is currently underway.

Authorities have urged the public to remain cautious about sharing personal verification codes and report any suspicious online activity promptly.
