24-Year-Old Woman Killed, Three Injured As Tent Collapses At Wayanad Eco-Resort
The incident occurred around 1 AM on Wednesday at the 900 Kandi Ecopark located in Meppadi, a forested hill station known for its remote charm and eco-tourism offerings.

A late-night tragedy struck a popular eco-resort in Wayanad district when a temporary tent structure gave way during heavy rain, claiming the life of a 24-year-old woman and injuring three others. The incident occurred around 1 AM on Wednesday at the 900 Kandi Ecopark located in Meppadi, a forested hill station known for its remote charm and eco-tourism offerings.
'Persistent Rainfall Led To Collapse'
The victim, Nishma, hailed from Akampadam near Nilambur in Malappuram district. She was part of a 16-member group from Malappuram visiting the resort. According to authorities, the structure — built from wooden planks and thatched with grass — collapsed under the weight of persistent rainfall, as per a report on NDTV.
Rescue efforts were immediately launched, and the injured were taken for medical attention. Nishma’s body was moved to a private medical college in Meppadi for post-mortem procedures.
The resort, which can be reached only by four-wheel drive vehicles due to its rugged terrain, features temporary, eco-friendly accommodations. Officials noted that the tent was one of several traditional-style structures built to attract nature-seeking tourists, but its failure raised serious concerns about safety and compliance.
Local police and revenue officials have initiated an inquiry into the incident, focusing on whether the resort had obtained the required permissions and followed safety norms in constructing its accommodations.
With the summer vacation season drawing to a close, Wayanad — a district that borders both Tamil Nadu and Karnataka — has seen an uptick in tourist footfall. The region’s reliance on tourism underscores the importance of ensuring visitor safety, particularly in ecologically sensitive and remote locations.
