Twitter Assures Full Update On New IT Rules Within A Week, Says Progress Duly Shared With Govt

The statement comes amid a standoff between the Centre and US-based firm over compliance with the new digital rules rolled out by India.

New Delhi: Days after Centre issued a stern final notice to Twitter regarding its non-compliance with the new IT rules, the micro-blogging site on Wednesday said that it is making every possible effort to comply with new digital guidelines and has assured to update within a week.

"Twitter has been and remains deeply committed to India, and serving vital public conversation taking place on the service. We have assured Govt of India that Twitter is making every effort to comply with new guidelines," the social media platform said in an official statement.

"...We are in advanced stages of finalising the appointment of the role of chief compliance office and we plan to provide additional details to you in the next several days, and at the latest within a week," Twitter said.

Company spokesperson also said that an overview of the progress has been duly shared with the Government of India and Twitter will continue its constructive dialogue with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).

The statement comes amid a standoff between the Centre and US-based firm over compliance with the new digital rules rolled out by India. The government has asked Twitter to comply with laws of the land and has given one week ultimatum for the same.

The letter by micro-blogging site was sent to Ministry of Electronics and IT on June 7.

"Twitter has been and remains deeply committed to India, and serving the vital public conversation taking place on the service. We have assured the Government of India that Twitter is making every effort to comply with the new Guidelines, and an overview on our progress has been duly shared. We will continue our constructive dialogue with the Indian government," Twitter spokesperson told news agency PTI.

As per the new IT rules, social media giants such as Twitter and Facebook and others who have over 50 lakh users are required to appoint a grievance officer, a nodal officer and a chief compliance officer. These personnel have to be residents in India.

The new social media guidelines came into effect from May 26, 2021 but Twitter has not complied with the rules.
