Illegal Tipu Sultan Memorial In Mumbai Demolished After Uproar By Righ-Wing Groups, BJP

An illegal memorial of Tipu Sultan in Maharashtra Dhule’s district was demolished after several local right-wing and Hindutva organisations raised objections over it.

An illegal memorial of Tipu Sultan, situated at Vadjai Road, Chauphuli in Maharashtra Dhule’s district, was demolished after several local right-wing and Hindutva organisations raised objections over it. The memorial of the 18th-century Mysore ruler was built by Dhule city MLA Faukh Shah Anwar. It was alleged that the memorial was built without permission and approval from the authorities. Following the protests by local Hindutva organisations and BJP leaders, the Municipal Corporation demolished the memorial. However, to avoid tension, the memorial was demolished in the middle of the night.

AIMIM MLA Farooq Anwar Shah built the memorial in the name of beautification of Hundred Feet Street in Vadjai and named it after Tipu Sultan. The local unit of the BJP started opposing it. For this, a letter was also sent to the state's Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. A complaint was also made to the District Superintendent of Police and the Municipal Corporation.

Collector Jalaj Sharma raised questions about the same to which the Municipal Corporation had no answers. After the objections, authorities decided to demolish the memorial. On Thursday midnight, the people who installed the statue, removed it, as reported by Divya Marathi.

Kolhapur Violence Over Tipu Sultan Video

This comes after tensions erupted in Maharashtra’s Kolhapur district on Wednesday as police used force to disperse a crowd that objected to the alleged use of Tipu Sultan’s image along with an objectionable audio message as social media “status” by some locals. Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis, who holds the Home portfolio, claimed that some politicians had been saying that there could be a riot-like situation in the state.

Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday said that any glorification of Aurangzeb will not be tolerated in the state. His statement came against the backdrop of some youths displaying photos of 17th Century Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in a procession in Ahmednagar and tension in Kolhapur city on Wednesday over the alleged use of Tipu Sultan’s image along with an objectionable audio message as social media “status” by some locals, reported PTI.

"Responding to comments of these leaders, youths of a particular community showcased pictures of Aurangzeb. They also glorified Aurangzeb and Tipu Sultan. It cannot be a mere coincidence. Why suddenly these images have been displayed in various districts of Maharashtra? It does not happen easily or automatically. As it cannot be a mere coincidence, we will have to dig deeper into this matter,” he said.

Following Wednesday’s broil, additional deployment was done and 21 people were detained, Kolhapur Superintendent of Police Mahendra Pandit told news agency ANI, adding that the situation is now under control.  “There was a complaint in Kolhapur yesterday about an objectionable status. Accordingly, two offences were registered and 5 people were detained. A mob had gathered outside Laxmipuri PS demanding legal action against them. When it was returning, some miscreants pelted stones & an offence registered against that too at Laxmipuri PS,” said the police official.

“Some organisations had given a call for 'Kolhapur bandh' today and they had gathered at a location. When their agitation concluded and they were returning, some miscreants pelted stones like yesterday. So, we have initiated legal action against them. Mob has dispersed. Police deployed everywhere. Situation is under control,” he added.
