From UP Assembly Session To Telangana Polls: The Week Ahead

The Week Ahead will see the Telangana polls being held and the Uttar Pradesh Assembly in session amid several curbs.

The Telangana elections will be held on November 30 amid a three-way fight between the BJP, the BRS, and the Congress. The Centre has convened an all-party meeting ahead of the Winter session of Parliament on December 4, a day after the results of the elections in five states.

Stay with ABP Live as we try to cut the clutter around the latest news from the political arena and help you understand what is likely to happen in The Week Ahead. Here are the biggest political developments expected to play out this week.

UP Assembly's Winter Session To Begin This Week, Mobiles Banned

The upcoming Winter Session of the Uttar Pradesh state assembly is scheduled to commence on November 28, marking the onset of a brief legislative period that will extend until December 1. A set of new regulations, endorsed during the preceding session, will be enacted, ushering in significant changes for the participating members.

One of the prominent alterations pertains to the prohibition of mobile phones within the assembly premises, reported news agency PTI. Leaders and members will no longer be allowed to carry these devices into the House, aligning with the revised guidelines. In addition, the prohibition extends to the entry of flags, banners, and posters during the session.

In a noteworthy move emphasizing the Yogi Adityanath government's commitment to women's empowerment, an official release on Saturday revealed that priority will be accorded to women members for speaking opportunities during the session. This strategic initiative aligns with the government's broader agenda to foster and prioritize the voices of women within the legislative framework.

The proceedings of the Winter Session will unfold over the course of four days, with the session ending on December 1.

Centre Convenes All-Party Meet Ahead Of Parliament's Winter Session

Ahead of the Winter session of Parliament, the government has convened an all-party meeting on December 2, according to news agency PTI.

The Winter session is scheduled to commence on December 4 and will extend until December 22, providing a substantial timeframe for legislative deliberations and decision-making.

Notably, the timing of the all-party meeting has been advanced by a day compared to the usual practice. This shift is attributed to the counting of votes for five states scheduled on December 3, coinciding with the assembly elections. The outcome of these elections is anticipated to significantly influence the proceedings of the upcoming session, as the government aims to secure the passage of crucial bills.

During the session, the Lok Sabha will witness the presentation of the report from the Ethics Committee, addressing the "cash-for-query" allegations against TMC MP Mahua Moitra. The adoption of this report by the House is imperative to enforce the recommended expulsion by the committee.

Additionally, three pivotal bills, intended to replace the IPC, CrPC, and the Evidence Act, are poised for consideration during the session. The standing committee on Home has recently endorsed these three reports, setting the stage for their thorough examination within the legislative framework.

Another noteworthy bill awaiting parliamentary attention pertains to the appointment of the chief election commissioner and election commissioners. Despite being introduced in the Monsoon session, the government refrained from pushing for its passage during the special session of Parliament, citing opposition protests and concerns from former chief election commissioners. The bill aims to align the status of the CEC and ECs with that of the cabinet secretary, paralleling the stature enjoyed by Supreme Court judges. The government's strategic approach to this bill reflects a nuanced consideration of various perspectives within the parliamentary landscape.

Telangana Polls To See Triangular Contest Between Congress, BJP, And BRS

The Telangana elections will be held on November 30. A triangular contest is likely to be seen across the state among the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the Congress.

In the 2018 Assembly election, the BRS (then TRS), emerged victorious by securing 88 seats out of the total 119. Their dominance was underscored by a formidable vote share of 47.4%. In stark contrast, the Congress found itself in a distant second position, managing to clinch only 19 seats with a vote share of 28.7%.

While the Congress has promised Rs 4,000 per month to the elderly among its 'six guarantees', the BRS has also announced sops for farmers, women, and pensioners. The BJP has, meanwhile, promised free laptops to girl students and an OBC CM among other assurances.
