Tamil Nadu, Puducherry Receive Rainfall Amid Low-Pressure System; Orange & Yellow Alerts Issued
IMD predicted heavy rainfall for the regions which are still recovering from the effects of Cyclone Fengal as the weather system is expected to approach the Tamil Nadu coast later in the day.
Several parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry experienced moderate rainfall on Wednesday morning. Chennai too has been receiving on and off showers due to a developing low-pressure system over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining east Equatorial Indian Ocean. Against this backdrop, heavy rainfall is predicted for the regions which are still recovering from the effects of Cyclone Fengal as this system is expected to approach the Tamil Nadu coast later in the day.
The weather system is projected to significantly impact districts like Cuddalore, Kallakurichi and Villupuram which are already affected by Cyclone Fengal's recent landfall, as reported by India Today.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), an orange alert has been issued for districts including Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Pudukkottai. Predicting very heavy rainfall on Wednesday, IMD has also issued orange alert for Union Territory of Karaikal.
A yellow alert has been announced for Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Tiruchi, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Kallakurichi, Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Chennai and Tiruvallur districts, along with Puducherry, where heavy rainfall is expected.

Independent weather blogger Tamil Nadu Weatherman, Pradeep John provided insights, stating: "Rains have started along the Tamil Nadu coast today due to the well-marked low-pressure system (WML). This system will bring widespread rainfall to Tamil Nadu over the next three days. The delta regions will receive rain first, followed by other coastal areas."
Further, Pradeep John explained the trajectory of the system. He said that the low-pressure is expected to pass via North Sri Lanka, the Palk Bay, Gulf of Mannar and into South Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Historically, he added that such paths have resulted in heavy rains across Tamil Nadu, including its interior and western regions.
Residents in the affected areas are advised to remain vigilant, as the heavy rainfall could lead to localized flooding and disruptions.
