Hail and heavy rain also hit Chandigarh on Thursday morning. This unseasonal rainfall occurred due to the influence of western disturbances, a sequence of cyclonic storms originating in the Mediterranean, travelling over 9,000 km to deliver winter rainfall to northwest India. These extratropical weather systems significantly impact the Indian subcontinent, particularly the northern and northwestern areas.

Previously, senior meteorologist RK Jenamani had highlighted the presence of a western disturbance in North India, gradually progressing eastward.

On Monday, temperature was recorded to be 1.8 degree in Srinagar and a thick wave of fog grappled the city.
