'Shouldn't Be In Team': TMC MP Saugata Roy Backs Congress Leader's 'Fat' Remark On Rohit Sharma

In a now-deleted post, Congress leader Shama Mohamed on Sunday fat-shamed Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma and later clarified that she said nothing wrong.

Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy on Monday backed Congress leader Shama Mohamed's 'fat' remark on Indian cricket team skipper Rohit Sharma, which drew massive backlash on social media.

In a now-deleted post, Mohamed on Sunday had said: "@ImRo45 is fat for a sportsman! Need to lose weight! And, ofcourse, the most unimpressive Captain India has ever had!" Her tweet came after Rohit Sharma was dismissed after 15 runs off 17 balls during a match against New Zealand for the Champions Trophy on Sunday.

Backing her remarks, Roy said that he agreed with the Congress leader and went on to add that Rohit Sharma "should not be allowed to play in the team". He bashed him for scoring low runs in the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy.

"I agree with what she said on Rohit Sharma. She made the remark as a cricket viewer, not a politician. For how long will Rohit Sharma be spared? He scored a century once. He just manages to score two, five and ten runs. shouldn't even be in the team," he said.

Congress Leader Says 'I'm Being Attacked For No Reason'

After facing backlash, the Congress leader defended her 'fat' r̥emark, saying that the tweet was "generic" and that she was being attacked "for no reason".

"It was a generic tweet about the fitness of a sportsperson. It was not body-shaming. I always believed a sportsperson should be fit, and I felt he was a bit overweight, so I just tweeted about that. I have been attacked for no reason. When I compared him with previous captains, I put in a statement. I have the right. What is wrong in saying? It is a democracy," she told news agency ANI.

Congress Distances Itself From Remark, Asks Mohamed To Delete Post

After a row erupted over the Congress leader's remark, the party distanced itself from it and asked Shama Mohamed to delete the 'fat' remark post.

Congress media and publicity department head Pawan Khera clarified the party's stance, saying that the remark does not reflect the party's position. "Dr. Shama Mohammed, National Spokesperson of the Indian National Congress, made certain remarks about a cricketing legend that do not reflect the party's position," Khera said.

"She has been asked to delete the concerned social media posts from X and has been advised to exercise greater caution in the future. The Indian National Congress holds the contributions of sporting icons in the highest regard and does not endorse any statements that undermine their legacy," he added.
