New Delhi: After being criticised by many for fat-shaming Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, the Loktantrik Janata Party (LJP) leader Sharad Yadav has said that he is ready to apologise to the BJP leader. Yadav, during an election campaign in Rajasthan's Alwar on December 5, had body-shamed Raj and said that she should take rest as she has gained weight. Earlier in the day while speaking to reporters, Yadav expressed regret for hurting Rajasthan CM and said that he will write to her about the same. “I have seen her comments. Our relations are very old. If she thinks whatever I said has hurt her, I express my regret. I will write a letter to her,” he said.
Earlier Yadav took a jibe at Raje and said, “Vasundhara ko aaram do, thak gayi hain, bahut moti ho gayi hain, pehle patli thi [Give some rest to Vasundhara, she is tired and has gained too much weight. Earlier, she was thin].” Soon after his comment came into light several across social media criticised LJP leader’s remarks and termed it misogynistic.
Raje also expressed her displeasure over the remark and sought action against Yadav. “I am shocked, I feel insulted. He has insulted women,” Raje said adding that it is very important for the Election Commission to take cognizance. “Is this the sort of example he wants to set for youngsters? The Congress and its allies should be restrained in their language,” she had said while speaking to reporters.
However, the Bihar leader said that he had no intentions to hurt the Rajasthan CM’s feelings. On Friday, he had tried to downplay his gaffe by terming it as humour. "I said it as a joke. I've old relations with her. It wasn't derogatory in any way. I had no intentions of hurting her. When I met her, I told her then also that you're gaining weight," he told news agency ANI.
This is not for the first time that Yadav has put himself in soup misogynistic and sexist remarks. In 2015, while speaking in Rajya Sabha, he had said: “The body of women from the south is as good as beautiful they are. They (women) in our region are not that good as those (in South) know dancing”.
