Mumbai: A team of the National Commission for Women (NCW) on Sunday met the family members of a 34-year-old woman, who died after being brutally raped in suburban Sakinaka.

The NCW team also visited the crime spot as well as the Rajawadi Hospital where the woman died after a nearly 36-hour battle for life and collected details in connection with the case.

The panel members also went to the Sakinaka police station to seek details of the case.

The woman, who was raped and assaulted with an iron rod in Sakinaka earlier on Friday, died while undergoing treatment the next day.

The 45-year-old suspect, who hails from Uttar Pradesh, was arrested within a few hours of the incident after being identified with the help of CCTV footage.

The accused, who worked as a driver and lived on the pavement in the same area, was later charged with murder.

Besides being raped, the victim was assaulted with an iron rod in her private parts and lost a lot of blood, a police official earlier said, adding that she was also stabbed with a knife, PTI reported.

Earlier on Saturday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray termed the incident as a “blot on humanity” and instructed senior police officers to file a chargesheet in the case within a month.

He also asked them to be alert to ensure that Mumbai’s image of being a safe city is not tarnished.

Mumbai Police Commissioner Hemant Nagrale on Saturday told the media that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to probe this case.

“Unfortunately, the victim died during treatment this morning and we have converted Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) to Section 302 (murder). The probe revealed there is only one person involved in the execution of the crime,” he added.
