New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday visited the 'Shri Guru Ravidas Vishram Dham Mandir' in Karol Bagh and offered prayers on the occasion of Ravidas Jayanti.
PM Modi also participated in 'Shabad Kirtan' at the Karol Bagh temple and interacted with the other visitors.
The mystic poet enjoys a nationwide following, especially among a section of the Dalits.
Earlier on Tuesday, Modi hailed Guru Ravidas, saying he dedicated his life to eliminating evil practices such as casteism and untouchability. The prime minister had said he would offers prayers for people's welfare at the temple.
Modi further said his government has imbibed the spirit of Guru Ravidas in every step and scheme.
The visit also holds significance due to the upcoming assembly elections in Punjab. The Punjab poll which was earlier scheduled for February 14 will now be held on February 20 due to Ravidas Jayanti.
Later in the day, PM Modi is scheduled to address a public rally in Jalandhar today. The election in Punjab for 117 assembly seats will be held on February 20.
PM Modi will visit other regions like Malwa, Doaba, and Majha on February 16 and 17. PM Modi will address his second rally in Pathankot today and the third rally in Abohar on February 17.
The BJP is contesting the Punjab polls in an alliance with former chief minister Amarinder Singh's Punjab Lok Congress and the Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa-led Shiromani Akali Dal (Sanyukt).
In the 2017 Assembly polls in the state, the Congress had won an absolute majority by winning 77 seats and ousted the SAD-BJP government which had been in power for 10 years.
