Sanjivani Scam: Delhi Court Summons Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot In Defamation Case Filed By Union Minister

Union Minister Gajendra Shekhawat recently filed a criminal defamation case against Gehlot for allegedly defaming him over the alleged Sanjivani scam.

Delhi's Rouse Avenue Court on Thursday summoned Rajasthan Chief Minister and Congress leader Ashok Gehlot in a defamation complaint filed by Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, ANI reported. The court has asked Gehlot to be present on August 7. Union Minister of Jal Shakti Gajendra Singh Shekhawat had recently filed a criminal defamation case against Gehlot for allegedly defaming him over the Sanjivani Credit Cooperative Society scam.

The summons in the Rs 900-crore scam was issued by Special Judge of the MP-MLA court, Justice Harjeet Singh Jaspal, who asked him to appear in the court on August 7. Shekhawat had filed the case in April, claiming that Gehlot had accused him and his family, including his deceased mother, of being involved in the scam and sought appropriate compensation, reported legal news website Live Law. He said that the case was investigated by the Rajasthan government and his name did not appear anywhere.

The Sanjivani scam is related to the instance of thousands of investors who were duped to the tune of Rs 900 crore. According to them, the money they invested was transferred to companies owned by Shekhawat, his wife, and others, but their roles were never investigated. Ashok Gehlot grabbed this opportunity to attack Shekhawat and raised the issue repeatedly. In March this year, a Delhi court ordered the police to investigate whether Gehlot had called Shekhawat and members of his family "accused" in the case or if he ever said that the allegations against Shekhawat were proved.

According to The Indian Express, Shekhawat alleged that Gehlot had falsely called his mother an accused in the case and that “... false, uncalled, derogatory and defamatory statements have been made with the aim to tarnish his image in the eyes of the general public, the voters and his kith and kin, with the object of gaining an undue political mileage.”

Gehlot is currently recuperating from a fractured toe.
