Large parts of India continue to battle flood and waterlogging issues as rain continues to lash the states of Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Odisha, Gujarat, and Delhi. Huge loss of lives and damage to property have been reported with several instances of landslides and rockslides. India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued 'Red', 'Orange', and 'Yellow' alerts for several states and districts.
In the wake of heavy rains and floods in Maharashtra, 13 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams are kept on standby in various districts in the state. Amid the heavy rainfall, different areas of Mumbai City witnessed waterlogging on Thursday. According to India Meteorological Department, Mumbai has received over 90 per cent of the average seasonal rainfall till Thursday. The Average monsoon rainfall in Mumbai is 2300 mm and the number has already touched 2128 mm. The number marks 92.5 per cent of the annual average rainfall in Mumbai.
All schools and colleges remained closed in Mumbai city and suburbs on Thursday as heavy rain battered the state.
The direction issued by the municipal corporation would apply to all municipal, government and private primary, secondary and higher secondary schools and all colleges.
Municipal Corporation (BMC) said, "In view of the heavy rainfall, BMC Commissioner and Administrator Dr Iqbal Singh Chahal has declared a holiday for all municipal, government and private primary, secondary and higher secondary schools and all colleges in Mumbai city and suburbs for tomorrow, July 27.”
Earlier, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday said that Mumbai experienced moderate to heavy rainfall from July 25-26. The Weather Department said that Mumbai recieved moderate to heavy rainfall from 8:30 AM on July 25 to 8:30 AM on July 26."
Meanwhile, rain lashed parts of the national capital during wee hours on Wednesday morning. Parts of the city such as ITO got waterlogged causing traffic snarls and hinderance in traffic movement. Parts of Delhi-NCR region including Noida and Ghaziabad experienced heavy rainfall early in the morning.
The IMD has predicted light to moderate rainfall till July 27, which will impact the temperature. Meanwhile, Yamuna river in the national capital is still flowing just few centimetres below the danger mark. At 10:00 pm Tuesday, the Yamuna water level near the old Yamuna Bridge was recorded at 205.24 metres against the danger mark of of 205.33 metres. It was 205.32 metres at 7:00 pm. The rise in water level has been a matter of concern, leading to a flood-like situation in the national capital and adjoining regions.
The river water level had been hovering around the danger mark of 205.33 metres for the last few days after reaching an all-time high of 208.66 metres on July 13.
