‘Modi Will Bow Down’: Rahul Gandhi’s Fierce Attack As Trump' Tariff Deadline Comes Close

Rahul Gandhi hits out at PM Modi, claiming he will bow to U.S. pressure, as just 3 days remain before Trump's 26% reciprocal tariffs take effect on Indian exports.

As the countdown to Donald Trump’s reciprocal tariffs enters its final stretch, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, claiming that the government will surrender under U.S. pressure.

With just three days left before the July 9 deadline, Gandhi criticized the Centre’s stance on the stalled trade deal with the United States, casting doubt on the government's ability to stand firm. His remarks followed Union Minister Piyush Goyal’s assurance that India would only sign a trade agreement if it safeguarded national interests.

But Gandhi wasn’t convinced, and posted on X saying, “Piyush Goyal can beat his chest all he wants. Mark my words, Modi will meekly bow to the Trump tariff deadline,” the Congress leader posted on X (formerly Twitter), firing a fresh shot in the ongoing political battle.

According to sources, negotiations between India and the U.S. are still underway, with an interim deal likely to be signed before the deadline expires. However, no official confirmation has been provided yet.

The pressure stems from Trump’s earlier move to impose steep tariffs—announced on April 2 as part of his so-called "Liberation Day" campaign. India was among the countries targeted, facing a 26% duty on key exports after being branded a “tariff king” by the former U.S. President, who accused New Delhi of unfair trade practices. Though the tariffs were temporarily suspended for 90 days, that window is now closing fast.
