PM Modi Expected To Join US President Joe Biden’s 'Summit Of Democracies': Report

"We have received an invitation for the Summit of Democracies and PM Modi is likely to participate in this virtual event," the sources were quoted by ANI in its report.

New India: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend the virtual "Summit of Democracies" organised by the United States.

"We have received an invitation for the Summit of Democracies and PM Modi is likely to participate in this virtual event," the sources quoted by ANI reports.

Modi's participation, along with leaders from more than 100 countries, is expected to include "individual and collective commitments to defend democracy and human rights at home and abroad."

As per the White House announcement regarding the summit, it is going to be similar to the climate change "goals" spelled out by leaders at the Glasgow summit.

US President Invited 110 Countries Including India To Attend Virtual Summit:

Earlier, United States President Joe Biden had invited India along with 109 other countries to attend a virtual summit on Democracy scheduled to happen on December 9 and 10, 2021.

The US State Department has invited 110 people to the virtual event, which seeks to prevent democratic backsliding and the loss of rights and freedoms throughout the world.

According to the State Department, the summit will concentrate on the challenges and possibilities facing democracies and will give a forum for leaders to declare both individual and collective pledges, reforms, and efforts to safeguard democracy and human rights at home and abroad.

The two-day virtual summit on Democracy will have three key themes according to the US State Department website. These three themes would be, defending against authoritarianism, addressing and fighting corruption, and promoting respect for human rights.

"For the United States, the summit will offer an opportunity to listen, learn, and engage with a diverse range of actors whose support and commitment are critical for global democratic renewal. It will also showcase one of democracy's unique strengths: the ability to acknowledge its imperfections and confront them openly and transparently, so that we may, as the United States Constitution puts it, form a more perfect union," the US state department said.
