PM Modi In Assam:
Earlier in the day, the prime minister stated that the establishment of new facilities such as AIIMS, Guwahati, and medical colleges will strengthen healthcare infrastructure in Assam and the entire Northeast.
Over the last nine years, he said, his government has worked hard to ensure dramatic improvements in social infrastructure in the Northeast.
"The Northeast was distant for previous governments...we have served with dedication to bring it close," the prime minister said at a ceremony to dedicate the nation's first AIIMS in the North East, built at a cost of Rs 1,123 crore.
Modi also officially opened three medical colleges in Nalbari, Nagaon, and Kokrajhar.
The three medical colleges' 500-bed tertiary care teaching hospitals with 24 undergraduate departments will begin with 100 annual MBBS student intakes, bringing Assam's total MBBS student intake to 1500.
He also laid the groundwork for the Rs 546 crore Assam Advanced Healthcare Innovation Institute (AAHII), a state government and IIT Guwahati collaboration.
AAHII's mission is to promote inventions and innovations in medicine and healthcare, as well as to foster multidisciplinary research and development in frontier areas of medicine by combining engineering and healthcare.
The prime minister also announced the distribution of 1.1 crores Ayushman cards to beneficiaries, who will be able to use these cards to receive cashless healthcare medical treatment benefits of up to Rs five lakh.
