‘Historic Occasion’: Modi Set To Visit Vienna In First Trip By Indian PM To Austria In Over 4 Decades

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will make a two-day visit to Austria and will call on Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen and hold talks with Chancellor Nehammer.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi talked about India and Austria's shared values, ahead of his visit to the European country next week. In an X post, Modi said democracy, freedom and the rule of law form the bedrock on which the two countries will build an ever-closer partnership.

Modi visits Austria on July 9 and 10, marking the first trip to the country by an Indian PM in over 40 years. During his stay in Vienna, PM Modi will call on Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen and hold talks with Chancellor Karl Nehammer. The chancellor and PM Modi will also address business leaders from India and Austria.

PM Modi's remarks came a day after Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer posted on X, "I very much look forward to welcoming Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, the world's largest democracy, next week in Vienna."

"This visit is a special honour as it marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister in over 40 years and a significant milestone as we celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations with India," he said.

"We will have the opportunity to talk about further deepening our bilateral relationship and closer cooperation on the many geopolitical challenges," the Austrian chancellor said.

PM Modi replied to the post by thanking Chancellor Nehammer, saying his visit to Austria would mark a "historic occasion". 

"Thank you, Chancellor Karl Nehammer. It is indeed an honour to visit Austria to mark this historic occasion. I look forward to our discussions on strengthening the bonds between our nations and exploring new avenues of cooperation."

Before Austria, PM Modi will be in Moscow on July 8 and 9 at the invitation of President Vladimir Putin, to hold the 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit.
