139 BJP Leaders, 49 Congress Members On List Of 306 MPs Facing Criminal Charges: ADR Report

Out of the 763 Sitting MPs in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, a staggering 306 (40%) have declared criminal cases against themselves such as charges of murder and crimes against women, as per the latest ADR report.

The latest analysis by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) has unveiled data about the criminal background of sitting members of Parliament in the country. According to the ADR analysis released on Tuesday, out of the 763 Sitting MPs in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, a staggering 306 (40%) have declared criminal cases against themselves such as charges of murder and crimes against women.

The ADR report categorises these criminal cases, highlighting that 194 (25%) of the Sitting MPs face serious criminal charges. These charges include cases related to murder, Attempt to murder, kidnapping, and crimes against women, among others.

The ADR's findings also break down these statistics according to political parties. Notably, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the ruling party in India, has 139 out of its 385 MPs with criminal cases against them. The Indian National Congress (INC), the principal opposition party, follows closely behind, with 43 out of its 81 MPs facing criminal charges.

The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) has 14 out of its 36 MPs entangled in criminal cases and similarly, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and Janata Dal (United) (JDU) each have 13 MPs facing criminal charges out of their total 34 and 21 parliamentarians respectively. The Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) also has 13 out of its 31 MPs with criminal cases.

Meanwhile, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) has 5 out of its 6 MPs with criminal backgrounds. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPI(M) has 6 out of its 8 MPs in the same predicament. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which rose to power with its anti-corruption stance, has 3 out of its 11 MPs facing criminal charges. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) also has 3 out of its 8 MPs facing such legal issues.

Declared Cases Related To Murder, Attempt To Murder, Kidnapping, And Crimes Against Women

Furthermore, the ADR report highlights specific cases within the data on criminal background. Alarmingly, 11 Sitting MPs have declared cases related to murder under Indian Penal Code Section 302, while 32 MPs have cases related to Attempt to murder under IPC Section 307. Additionally, 21 MPs have cases related to crimes against women, with four of them facing charges related to rape under IPC Section-376.

These findings by the ADR come as concerns are raised time and again about the prevalence of politicians with criminal backgrounds in the country's legislative body, prompting discussions about electoral reforms and the suitability of such candidates for public office.
