Parliament Monsoon Session LIVE Updates: Hello and welcome to ABP News Live Blog. Please follow the space and keep refreshing the page for all the latest updates pertaining to the ongoing Monsoon session of Parliament. Proceedings of both Houses -- Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha--are expected to be stormy, with protests and verbal clashes between the Treasury and Opposition benches over several issues including potential amendments in the Waqf Act, limiting the boards' powers.
In the Lok Sabha, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is set to introduce the Appropriation Bill and Finance Bill, while Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal will also present legislation on readjusting representation of Scheduled Tribes in Goa’s assembly constituencies. In Rajya Sabha, Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas and Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri will see the introduction of the Oilfields (Regulation and Development) Amendment Bill.
In the Upper Sabha, opposition members also plan to discuss the functioning of several ministries, including Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, New and Renewable Energy, and Cooperation.
Sources have also suggested that the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government would also propose amendments to the Waqf Act, potentially limiting the Waqf Board’s authority to designate properties. The move was reportedly in line with demands from the Muslim community. “There have been demands from within the community to amend the law to bring transparency and accountability ...some Muslim high court judges had flagged that the decision taken by Waqf boards cannot be challenged in courts. Now, the amendment bill seeks to set that right,” a report by news agency PTI quoted a person familiar with the government’s decision as saying. However, so far, there has been no confirmation from the government over this.
Key Parliamentary Panels Constituted Without Elections
Key parliamentary panels, including the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), have started taking shape, mostly by consensus as against elections witnessed during the previous Lok Sabha. Besides the PAC, which examines government expenditure, the Committee on Public Undertakings, the Committee on Estimates, the Committee on Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, the Joint Committee on Office of Profit and the Committee on Welfare of Other Backward Classes have been constituted without an election. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla is expected to nominate the chairpersons of the panels soon, parliamentary officials said.
