Opposition Questions Timing Of Special Parliamentary Session, Demands Govt To Cite Agenda

The Opposition leaders slammed the government over its decision of a special Parliamentary Session and said the Centre must cite the reason behind its urgency.

New Delhi: The Opposition leaders on Thursday came down heavily on the Centre over the announcement of a special parliamentary session from September 18-22. The Centre’s decision was made public after Union Minister Pralhad Joshi took to X, formerly Twitter, to announce the five-day session in the new Parliament building.

“Special Session of Parliament (13th Session of 17th Lok Sabha and 261st Session of Rajya Sabha) is being called from 18th to 22nd September having 5 sittings.  Amid Amrit Kaal looking forward to have fruitful discussions and debate in Parliament,” Joshi posted earlier in the day.

Tearing into the government over its decision, Congress MP Deepender S Hooda said the Centre must cite the reason behind its urgency, especially when the Monsoon Session concluded just a few weeks back.

Talking to news agency ANI, Hooda said, “Earlier the members used to get notifications from the Lok Sabha Speaker and Rajya Sabha Chairman, now we get to know through tweets of Pralhad Joshi. Now that the Monsoon Session is over, what could be the reason behind urgency for this session in September? Let the government tell the reason for this urgent session.”

Accusing the BJP of not being “serious” about ensuring normal functioning of the Parliament, CPI National Council Secretary, Binoy Viswam said, “BJP is not serious about the parliament. They want to cut short the number of days. If the BJP allowed the parliament to function properly, we would have raised the people's and the country's issues before the parliament.”

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi termed the move as an “anti-Hindu” act and questioned the timing of the session. She said that the special session will coincide with Ganesh Chaturthi, a festival which holds great significance for the Hindus.

Speaking to the media, Chaturvedi said, “The manner in which Pralhad Joshi has secretly taken this decision and tweeted - my question is that a very important festival of the country, Ganesh Chaturthi (will be celebrated at that time). So, we want to know why is this anti-Hindu act being done? On what basis has the decision been taken? Is this their 'Hindutvavadi' mindset?”

Notably, 10 important Bills are likely to be introduced during the special session, sources told ABP News.
