Opposition 'INDIA' MPs Led By Kharge To Meet President Murmu Tomorrow To Discuss Manipur Issue

Apart from Manipur, the leaders will also "raise the Haryana issue and the functioning of Parliament before President Droupadi Murmu."

I.N.D.I.A parties delegation will meet President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday at 11:30 am to brief her about the situation in Manipur where ethnic violence has claimed scores of lives and the steps to be taken to bring normalcy in the north-eastern state.

Apart from Manipur, the leaders will also "raise the Haryana issue and the functioning of Parliament before her," according to the Congress sources, news agency ANI reported.

Earlier on Monday, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge had sought appointment from President Droupadi Murmu on behalf of the opposition parties to discuss the Manipur issue, according to the sources, PTI reported.

The opposition parties have been calling for an exhaustive debate on the violence in Manipur in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, as well as a response from the Prime Minister in Parliament.

They have now requested the President's involvement, stating that the violence in the BJP-ruled northeastern state is still ongoing and that many people have been killed.

A group of 21 opposition MPs visited the ethnically divided state and briefed INDIA alliance leaders on the situation. The group went to the damaged areas and spoke with individuals in relief camps in both the hills and the valley.

The Congress chief stated that opposition coalition INDIA MPs who visited Manipur to examine the situation heard heartbreaking stories of agony from the people there.

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, a Lok Sabha member who was part of the opposition team to Manipur, characterised the situation in the state as "grave."

"While Manipur faced turmoil, the Modi government appeared indifferent," he had tweeted, adding that the community split was "deeply concerning."

"Despite time for poll rallies, self-PR train inaugurations, and attending BJP meetings, PM Modi seems to have no time to address the anguish and suffering of Manipur's people or work towards resolving inter-community issues," Kharge stated.
