Around 120 people were killed and at least 800 people injured when the Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express derailed near the Bahanaga Station in Balasore, Odisha, on Friday evening. The high-speed train derailed and was then hit by a freight train. Around 10-12 coaches of the Coromandel Express are reported to have been derailed. Rescue and relief operations have begun. Visuals from the site showed that locals are assisting in the rescue operations.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her shock on Twitter, saying that passengers from her state were also affected by the collision. She assured coordination with the Odisha government and South Eastern Railways to assist those affected.
The West Bengal government activated an emergency control room and provided helpline numbers for information. Law enforcement and railway personnel, along with the local community, promptly responded to the scene and are currently engaged in rescue operations. Mamata Banerjee said her government has sent a team to the spot to coordinate with the Odisha government and railway authorities and to assist in rescue operations.

Over 50 ambulances have been dispatched to the site, and patients are being transferred to the Soro Community Health Centre. Additional assistance from higher facilities may be required.
The Special Relief Commissioner's office confirmed the accident and deployed teams for search and rescue operations. The Balasore Collector was instructed to be present at the scene and make necessary arrangements. Any further assistance required from the state level would be coordinated accordingly.
Odisha CM Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik has reached the control room to take stock of rescue and relief operations. He will visit the site on Saturday morning.

The Coromandel Express started at its scheduled departure time of 3.20 pm from West Bengal's Shalimar to Tamil Nadu's Chennai for the first time since the June 2 three-train accident in Odisha.

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday also distributed the ex gratia cheques to the families of the victims from West Bengal. The investigation into the cause of the accident has been undertaken by the CBI.
Meanwhile, the BJP and the Opposition have locked horns over the accident, with the latter demanding Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw's resignation.
