Najeeb Jung resignantion: 10 this to know about Delhi Lieutenant Governor

NEW DELHI: Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung on Thursday resigned and said he will return to academics, "his first love". In his letter, he thanked Prime Minister for all the help and cooperation he received during his tenure as the Lt. Governor of Delhi. Jung also thanked the people of Delhi for all their support and affection, and the Chief Minister of Delhi for his association in the last two years. Delhi CM  Kejriwal said that Jung's resignation has surprised him. "Sh Jung's resignation is a surprise to me. My best wishes in all his future endeavours," CM tweeted. Here are 10 things you need to know about Najeeb Jung:
  • Jung was born on 18th January, 1951 at Delhi. He did his schooling from St. Columba’s School, Delhi and graduation from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University.
  • He did his M.A. History from University of Delhi and a M.A. in Social Policy and Planning in Developing Countries from the London School of Economics, U.K.
  • He was an IAS officer from the Madhya Pradesh cadre and a former Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia.
  • Jung worked as Senior Energy Advisor and Principal Energy Specialist from 1995 to 1999 at the Asian Development Bank.
  • He went to the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies in 2005 and returned to India in 2008 and was appointed the Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia in 2009.
  • Jung became the Lt Governor on July 9, 2013 when a Congress-led coalition was in office. The Modi government retained him even as it replaced most Governors in the states.
  • He was regularly in news for his power tussle with Arvind Kejriwal since the latter was elected chief minister of Delhi.
  • Kejriwal had often accused Jung of working at the behest of the Centre. Kejriwal has in recent times publicly blamed Modi for Jung’s involvement in subjects which the Delhi government says lie outside the Lt. Governor’s domain.
  • "My rapport (with Arvind Kejriwal) is very good. I find him a gentleman. I have never had an altercation with him, though we have disagreed violently on file," Jung said about the Delhi chief minister.
  • Jung had one and a half years of service still left and the decision behind this sudden and surprise move is not known yet.
