Nagaland Civilian Killings: 5-Member TMC Delegation Visit After Mon Firing Called Off

A five-member delegation of Trinamool Congress (TMC) has called off their visit to Nagaland in view of section 144 and the deteriorating law and order situation.

New Delhi: A five-member delegation of Trinamool Congress (TMC) has called off their visit to Nagaland in view of section 144 and the deteriorating law and order situation.

Earlier, the delegation was set to meet the families of those who have died in the firing incident in the Mon district. The TMC delegation comprised of members of Parliament Prasun Banerjee, Sushmita Dev, Aparupa Poddar and Santanu Sen and party spokesperson Biswajit Deb.

West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC head Mamata Banerjee expressed condolences to the dead families on Sunday and urged for a thorough probe of the Indian army's bungled counter-insurgency operation, which resulted in the deaths of 14 civilians and one soldier.

Taking to Twitter, the TMC Supremo writes, "Worrisome news from Nagaland. Heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. I pray for the speedy recovery of those who were injured. We must ensure a thorough probe into the incident and ensure that all victims get justice!"

SIT To Investigate "Unfortunate" Killings Of Civilians

Previously, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio had announced that a high-level SIT team will be constituted by the state government to investigate the "unfortunate" killings of civilians.

He appealed for calm as he described the "unfortunate incident" that resulted in the "death of civilians" in the area.

Mistaken Identity Led To The Killings

The atmosphere in the neighbourhood remained tense after security officers opened fire on people, potentially due to mistaken identity, according to authorities.

Security personnel were allegedly alerted to the presence of rebels affiliated with the Yung Aung faction of the proscribed organisation NSCN (K) and were watching their movements.

After receiving information on the movement of a faction of the NSCN (K), the army apparently launched an operation that resulted in an encounter, with the vehicle carrying the daily wagers was caught in the middle.

According to sources, the casualties included daily wagers who were returning from Tiru in a pick-up truck that purportedly came under fire from army forces engaged in an anti-terror operation.
