MVA Allies To Hold 'Explanatory' Sessions To Explain SC Verdict On Maha Political Crisis To People

MVA partners claimed that those in power in the state are spreading false information about the SC's ruling on the political crisis that led to the fall of the Uddhav government last year.

The Maharashtra government, led by Eknath Shinde and Devendra Fadnavis, was labelled "unconstitutional" by the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) allies on Saturday (May 20), who claimed that those in power were spreading misinformation about the Supreme Court's recent ruling on the political crisis that led to the fall of the Uddhav Thackeray government last year. At a joint press conference in Thane, Anand Paranjape, city unit president of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and his Shiv Sena (UBT) and Congress counterparts Pradeep Shinde and Vikrant Chavan, respectively, said the three allies would reach out to people and explain the significance of the apex court's ruling.

In a Tweet, Paranjape shared a poster of such sessions with the caption "Unconstitutional government will be exposed!"

The Supreme Court said in its verdict on a batch of pleas related to the political crisis that led to the MVA government's fall on May 11 that it cannot restore the then-MVA government led by Uddhav Thackeray because he resigned without facing a floor test in June last year and that Eknath Shinde will continue as Maharashtra's chief minister.

The court also called on former Maharashtra governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari, saying he lacked reasons based on objective evidence to conclude that then-chief minister Thackeray had lost the House's confidence. It did, however, say that because Thackeray resigned without facing the floor test, the governor was justified in inviting Shinde to form government at the request of the BJP, the largest political party in the House.

"The government led by Eknath Shinde and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has misinterpreted the judgment, which is confusing the people of the state," Paranjpe was quoted as saying by news agency PTI. "But we want to put things in context by explaining the Supreme Court's decision. As a result, the MVA has decided to reach out to the public and explain what the verdict means in terms of the governor's role and other issues. We will plan sessions around this, he added further. To begin, he said, a session for the three parties' office-bearers will be held in Thane on Tuesday.

Later on, such explanatory sessions will be held in each district and taluka, according to Shinde and Chavan. Senior local leaders from the MVA partners will address the session in Thane and explain the judgment point by point, they said.
