Mukhtar Ansari Found Guilty In 36-Year-Old Arms License Case, Verdict To Be Announced Tomorrow

The MP/MLA court will announce the quantum of the sentence on Wednesday.

New Delhi: A special court in Varanasi on Tuesday found gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari guilty in a 36-year-old fake arms license case. The MP-MLA court of Varanasi presented Ansari to the court of Special Judge Avneesh Gautam through video conferencing from Banda jail.

The MP/MLA court will announce the quantum of the sentence on Wednesday. He has been found guilty under the Arms Act. 

Additionally, Mukhtar Ansari has been acquitted in the corruption case. The entire 36-year-old case revolves around fraudulent practices related to authentic licenses.

Mukhtar Ansari stands accused of obtaining a fake signature from the District Magistrate (DM) and Superintendent of Police (SP) to secure a license. His appearance was facilitated via video conferencing from Banda jail.

Testimonies from 10 individuals have been recorded in this case thus far.

Mukhtar Ansari is alleged to have obtained a fraudulent license through fraudulent means. Notably, the former Chief Secretary and former Director-General of Police (DGP) have also provided testimony in this case.

Case Was Registered Under Following Sections-

The special court had framed charges under Sections 467, 468, 420, and 120B of the IPC and Section 13(2) of the Anti-Corruption Act.

In the aforementioned case, Mukhtar Ansari was accused of obtaining weapons licenses by forging the signatures of the then-District Magistrate Alok Ranjan and the then-Superintendent of Police Devaraj from Gazipur.

The case was registered in 1990, and after an investigation by the CBI, allegations were made against Mukhtar Ansari and the then arms clerk Gauri Shankar Lal.

The accused faced charges under the Prevention of Corruption Act, among other sections. As a result, the case was deliberated in the special jurisdictional court in Varanasi. Additionally, during the proceedings of the case Ashwini Upadhyay vs. Bharat Sangh, as per the orders of the Honorable Supreme Court, the case remained under consideration in the special court of MP/MLA, where the verdict was delivered today.
