Monsoon Likely To Reach Kerala This Week

Ahead of Southwest Monsoon onset, Kerala, along with parts of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, has already been experiencing persistent and intense rainfall over the past several days.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Tuesday that the southwest monsoon is likely to make its onset over Kerala within the next four to five days—nearly a week ahead of the usual June 1 arrival. This forecast comes shortly after the IMD had projected the monsoon would hit Kerala by May 27. The early progression marks a significant development in this year’s monsoon pattern.

In an IMD update on Tuesday, as per PTI, "Conditions are likely to become favourable for monsoon onset over Kerala during next 4-5 days."

Meanwhile, Kerala, along with parts of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, has already been experiencing persistent and intense rainfall over the past several days.Bengaluru also witnessed flood-like situation with inundation of over 500 homes. Around three people lost their lives in the rain-related events. Similarly, three people including a 10-year-old boy was killed in a rain-related wall collapse incident in Madurai district of Tamil Nadu.

On Tuesday, IMD also said, "Southwest Monsoon further advanced over some more parts of south Arabian Sea, Maldives & Comorin area; South Bay of Bengal; some more parts of central Bay of Bengal and some parts of northeast Bay of Bengal today, the 19th May 2025."

Southwest Monsoon: Historical Trends

The southwest monsoon typically arrives in Kerala around June 1, progressing across the country to cover all regions by July 8. It starts retreating from northwest India in mid-September and fully withdraws by October 15.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted in April 2025 that this year's monsoon would bring above-normal rainfall, backed by the absence of El Niño, which often weakens monsoonal activity in India.
