Monsoon Mayhem Andhra, Telangana: 8 Dead In Rain-Related Incidents, Trains Services Hit Amid Heavy Flooding

Heavy rainfall has caused flooding and disruption in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Eight people have died in Andhra, including five from a landslide in Vijayawada.

Incessant rainfall wreaked havoc in several parts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana on Sunday, causing severe flooding and crippling normal life. In Andhra, eight persons have been killed in rain-related incidents since Saturday, including five in Vijayawada due to a landslide. The situation in Telangana also remained grim, with flooding low-lying areas and disrupting road connections between villages. Both states sounded alert as the coastal states brace for more rain in the coming days due to the ongoing impact of a depression in the Bay of Bengal.

In Andhra Pradesh, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu told the officials to take urgent steps to mitigate the situation arising from heavy rains. In a review meeting on Saturday, Naidu asked officials of all concerned departments to be on their toes in view of the likelihood of more rains.

In Vijayawada, a rain-triggered landslide killed five persons in Mogalrajapuram. According to Vijayawada Municipal Commissioner HM Dhyanachandra, landslides occurred at one single point in Mogalrajapuram with large boulders falling on two houses due to heavy rain. CM Naidu has announced an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh each to the kin of the landslide victims.

In Guntur district, a teacher and two students, while returning home died after their car was washed away while crossing an overflowing stream.

Due to incessant rain since Saturday morning, there has been a flood-like situation in several districts including Vijayawada, Machilipatnam, Gudivada, Kaikaluru, Narasapuram, Amaravati, Mangalagiri, Nandigama, and Bhimavaram. CM has directed officials to immediately release Rs 3 crore to each district to undertake relief measures. The severe waterlogging and flooding have also affected train services on the Vijayawada-Warangal route.

In its forecast for Sunday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted fairly widespread to widespread light/moderate rainfall over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam region.

Meanwhile, in Telangana, heavy downpours on Saturday caused significant disruption in many parts of Telangana, submerging low-lying areas, and cutting road links between several villages. Rivulets in districts like Mahabubabad, Narayanpet, and Khammam were in spate, further hampering transportation and access to rural regions.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted scattered, heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated extremely heavy showers over Telangana today.
