WATCH | Part Of NH-6 In Meghalaya Caves In Due To Heavy Rain, Traffic Disrupted

Incessant rainfall destroyed a huge chunk of NH6 which connects Southern Assam, Mizoram, Tripura and parts of Manipur to the rest of the country.

New Delhi: Due to the unrelenting rain at East Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya, a chunk of the National Highway - 6 under Lumshnong Police station was destroyed on Wednesday. This led to traffic disruption and people were asked to avoid the route, especially at night. Videos of the area show water flowing down the hill, where a part of the road has has caved in and a truck hanging on the edge.

As work to clear the road was in progress, a police team from Umkiang PP delivered essential supplies to the stranded passengers on NH 06. Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma told ANI, that "due to heavy rainfall, last night and early morning in different parts of Meghalaya, especially East Jaintia Hills district, certain important road connections were severely damaged. He added, I've taken a review meeting with Deputy Commissioners, Ministers & officials from diff districts".

He added, "Post the meeting, we have decided to form 4 regional committees to be headed by respective ministers to closely monitor the situation in the next 24-48 hours in the districts & to ensure that steps are taken to ease the movement of vehicles".

This year, Meghalaya has been hit with incessant rainfall, leading to people being displaced and a lot of damage to structures. Earlier in the month, a video of a bridge being washed away in Meghalaya due to flooding had gone viral on social media. The bridge over the Bugi river connected Jijika to Megua in the South Garo Hills region. Bugi is said to be the third-biggest river in Garo Hills.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Cherrapunji recorded a massive 811.6 mm of rainfall in 24 hours ending 8.30 am on Wednesday, the highest in June since 1995.
