Mathura: Two Die Of Asphyxia At Overcrowded Banke Bihari Temple During Janmashtami Celebrations

As worshippers gathered to the temple to celebrate the event, the shrine became extremely crowded.

Officials claimed on Saturday that two persons died of asphyxia and six others were wounded during janmashtami festivities on August 19 at the Banke Bihari Temple in Mathura, news agency ANI reported.

As worshippers gathered to the temple to celebrate the event, the shrine became extremely crowded.

Police identified the deceased as Nirmala Devi and Ram Prasad Vishwakarma, who were confirmed dead at the hospital.

Another pilgrim slumped and fainted near the temple's departure gate, causing devotees' movements to be limited. During Mangala Aarti, the incidence occurred.

"During Mangla Arti at Banke Bihari in Mathura, one devotee fainted at the exit gate of the temple due to which movement of devotees was restricted. As there was a huge crowd, many inside the premises suffocated. Two people lost their lives," Senior Superintendent of Police, Mathura was quoted by ANI in its report.

Six persons were injured, according to preliminary reports. The injured were promptly sent to a hospital as officials took control of the situation.

On Friday, Janmashtami was widely celebrated around the country. Temples were seen illuminated with colourful lights, and cries of "Jai Shree Krishna" could be heard echoing across many cities and towns.

Devotees also flocked to the Lord Krishna temple in Mathura and around the country to take part in the Janmashtami midnight celebrations.

Janmashtami is a Hindu holiday commemorating the birth of Lord Krishna. Lord Krishna, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, was born on the eighth day of the month of Bhadra, according to the Hindu calendar.

According to the Western calendar, the day usually falls in August or September. The celebration is marked with prayer offerings to Lord Krishna, elaborately painted swings, dancing and music performances, and the Dahi Handi competition.

Meanwhile, earlier this month, there was a stampede at the Khatu Shyamji Temple's monthly bazaar in Rajasthan's Sikar. At least three ladies were killed, and numerous more were wounded.
