Rahul Gandhi Slams BJP, PM Modi After Biren Singh's Resignation: 'Instigated Division In Manipur For 2 Years'

Rahul Gandhi demanded PM Modi's visit to address the situation and restore peace in Manipur.

Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi on Sunday slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party and Biren Singh after he resigned from his post, amid ethnic violence in the state.

"For nearly two years, BJP's CM Biren Singh instigated division in Manipur," Gandhi said in a post on X.

Attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Congress MP said the PM "allowed him to continue despite the violence, loss of life, and the destruction of the idea of India in Manipur."

"The resignation of CM Biren Singh shows that mounting public pressure, the SC investigation and the no-confidence motion by the Congress have forced a reckoning," he added.

He also called for restoration of peace as urgent priority and demanded PM Modi should visit the state.

"But the most urgent priority is to restore peace in the state, and work to heal the wounds of the people of Manipur. PM Modi must visit Manipur at once, listen to the people and finally explain his plan to bring back normalcy," he said.

Congress MP from Inner Manipur, A Bimol Akoijam said the people of the state "deserve responsible government who can deal with the situations."

Party MP Jairam Ramesh said Singh's resignation was a "compulsion."

"You need to understand the chronology...Tomorrow, the Congress party was going to move a no-confidence motion in the Manipur assembly...Manipur CM realised that he does not have the majority...so he tendered his resignation today. It was his compulsion," Ramesh said.

He further said the situation in Manipur is the responsibility of the Union Home Minister and that he should also resign. The Congress MP questioned as to why PM Modi has not visited the state yet.

"The situation will not change with the appointment of a new Chief Minister...PM Modi should immediately visit Manipur...," he said.
