Manipur Landslide: Death Toll Rises To 14, Over 60 Feared Trapped As Rescue Operation Continues

The death toll in Manipur landslide incident has risen to 14. According to the local administration close to 60 people including villagers, army & railway personnel, labourers are still feared trapped under the debris, reported news agency ANI. Since the rescue operation began Thursday, 23 people have been pulled out from under the debris but 14 have succumbed to their injuries.
 
Speaking to the media Friday, Manipur DGP P Doungel said, " 23 people were brought out from debris of which 14 dead. More are being searched. Not confirmed how many are buried but as of now 60 people including villagers, army & railway personnel, labourers (buried)."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with Chief Minister N Biren Singh Thursday reviewed the landslide situation in Manipur caused due to incessant rainfall and assured the state government of help by the Centre.

 "Spoke to Manipur CM Shri @NBirenSinghJi and reviewed the situation due to a tragic landslide. Assured all possible support from the Centre. I pray for the safety of all those affected. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon," PM Modi tweeted.

The incident took place at Tupul yard railway construction site in Manipur's Noney district on Wednesday night. Heavy rain in the area caused damage to Tupul station building of ongoing Jiribam–Imphal new line project. 

"Landslide also stuck the track formation, camps of construction workers and rescue operations is in progress," the NF Railway CPRO said, while speaking to the media Thursday, reported ANI
