Surya Namaskar: Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said his ministry aims to encourage more people to practice Surya Namaskar, which helps in strengthening the body and mind.

New Delhi: Union AYUSH Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said on Wednesday 75 lakh people across the world will perform Surya Namaskar on the occasion of Makar Sankranti on January 14.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of AYUSH, other ministries will also join the campaign. Sonowal said Surya Namaskar is a good way to raise the immunity level, which has become necessary due to the pandemic.

He also said his ministry aims to encourage more and more people to practise Surya Namaskar that helps not only strengthen the body but also the mind.

A live telecast on DD National from 7 am to 7:30 am will show 13 rounds of Surya Namaskar being done by participants at a programme, which will also have leading Yoga gurus from global institutions sharing their messages, the ministry statement said.

Secretary, AYUSH, Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha and MDNIY Director Dr IV Basavaraddi will also address the event, besides Sonowal and MoS for AYUSH Dr Munjpara Mahendrabhai Kalubhai.

Yoga Break In Offices

Earlier also, the Ministry of AYUSH had launched several campaigns to promote Yoga. In November last year, the Ministry of AYUSH wrote to all departments of the government to give a 'Yoga Break' to give the employees a relief from the stress of working in the office throughout the day.

The ministry believed that this break would relieve the fatigue of the employees and give them new energy to work. The Ministry of AYUSH sent letters to all ministries asking them to encourage employees to take 'Yoga breaks'. A ministry official said the 'yoga break' was first implemented in six major metro cities in January last year based on a pilot project.

The five-minute break was given to introduce the employees to Yogasanas. The purpose of the short routine was to reduce work-related stress and make employees feel fresh at work.
