Maharashtra: The Maratha reservation row, which seemed to have seized; once again escalated on Monday in Pune; as protesters torched several vehicles and vandalised buses on Pune-Nashik highway. Atleast 30 buses were set ablaze and more than 100 vehicles were vandalised by the protesters. The protesters behind vandalism are suspected to be from the Maratha Kranti Morcha. These violent protests escalated soon after a peaceful ‘raasta roko’ (block the way) protest was organised; which eventually turned violent. The incident left many police officials injured along with the locals. The Marathas are demanding for a 16% reservation in Educational institutes and jobs. Maratha Kranti Morcha convenor Vinod Patil demanded that the government must announce a time-bound programme to implement Maratha quotas by Tuesday, failing which the stir would be intensified from August 1.
