Heavy Rain Causes Waterlogging And Traffic Disruptions In Mumbai But Brings Temperature Down

Various other districts of Maharashtra, including Thane, Nashik, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Ahmednagar, Satara and Jalgaon, also received heavy showers. In Palghar, a road caved in.

Mumbai and its neighbouring areas received heavy rains over a 24-hour period beginning Saturday, following which several parts of the city faced waterlogging issues. According to ANI, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a Yellow Alert for the city for Sunday, and added that conditions were favourable for monsoon arrival in Mumbai within the next two days.

The waterlogging caused traffic to come to a standstill in some areas. There were also complaints that the snarls lasted hours with no redress from the authorities. Various other districts of Maharashtra, including Thane, Nashik, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Ahmednagar, Satara and Jalgaon, also received heavy showers.

Due to the heavy showers, a road in Mumbai's neighbouring Palghar district caved in, affecting traffic movement on the busy Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway for more than four hours on Sunday morning. The stretch affected lay in the Maljipada area of Palghar, and there was repair works under way along the road when it caved it, police said, as reported by PTI.

Temperature & Maximum Rainfall

In the 24-hour period ended on Sunday at 8.30 am, Mumbai received 60 mm of rainfall. The Colaba observatory situated in south Mumbai recorded 67 mm rainfall, while the Santacruz observatory, near the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, recorded 64 mm in the same period, the IMD said.

The Colaba observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 34.8 degrees Celsius, 1.1 degree higher than normal, while the minimum temperature was 24.3 degrees Celsius, 2.9 degrees lower than normal, it added.

Agriculturally significant districts such as Satara recorded 91 mm of rain, while Nashik got 64 mm, Ahmednagar, 57 mm, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, 51 mm, and Jalgaon 41 mm, PTI report, citing an IMD bulletin.

Thane and Palghar districts also experienced heavy rainfall overnight, leading to waterlogging in several areas. There were reports of tree branches falling in some areas of Thane city, which received 37.06 mm of rainfall.
