Annamalai, Hindu Munnani Leaders Booked Over Inflammatory Remarks At Madurai Event

Those named in FIR report include former TN BJP chief Annamalai, Subramaniam, Hindu Munnani member Selvakumar, and others.

A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against former Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai, Hindu Munnani state chief Kadeswara Subramaniam, and others for allegedly delivering inflammatory speeches during a religious gathering in Madurai on June 22. The gathering, titled the Murugan Devotees Conference, was organised by the Hindu Munnani and held under strict supervision following orders from the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court.

The city police had enforced 52 conditions to ensure the event maintained public order—explicitly banning political and communal speeches, reported ANI.

Despite the court's restrictions, several leaders reportedly made politically charged and sensitive remarks, prompting criticism from various quarters. Advocate Vanchinathan, on behalf of the Madurai Interfaith People's Federation, filed a formal complaint with Police Commissioner Lokanathan, urging action for the violation of the court's directives, as per a report on India Today.

Subsequent investigations led to the filing of an FIR at the Anna Nagar Police Station. Those named in the report include Annamalai, Subramaniam, Hindu Munnani member Selvakumar, and others. They have been charged under sections related to promoting religious enmity, inciting communal tensions, and disrupting public peace.

This development adds to Annamalai's legal troubles. In a separate incident from December 2024, he and over 900 BJP members faced police action for conducting a protest in Chennai without permission. The protest, termed a ‘Black Day’, opposed the Tamil Nadu government’s decision to allow a funeral procession for SA Basha, convicted in the 1998 Coimbatore bombings.
