Lok Sabha elections: EC asks govt to ban political ads 48 hours before voting

New Delhi: In order to ensure unbiased elections, The Election Commission of India on Tuesday asked Law Ministry of India to ban any sort of Electoral campaign or advertisement 48 hours before voting. This has come only days before 2019 Lok Sabha elections. As per Election Commission, all Digital and print media platforms should be banned from displaying election related advertisements. This will come in play by amending section 126 of People’s Representative act. As per election commission, a stop on such ads which are shown 48 hours before the voting can also stop the impact on voter’s mind. The Lok Sabha elections are set to take place this year. The Election Commission of India is yet to announce the dates of the same. Gearing up for the Lok Sabha polls due this summer, the Election Commission has directed all state governments to transfer officials posted in their home districts and those who have spent three years in a district in the last four years. In a letter addressed to all state chief secretaries and chief electoral officers, the Commission pointed out that polls to Lok Sabha and assemblies of Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha and Sikkim are due shortly. It said while the term of the 16th Lok Sabha ends on June 3, the terms of Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha and Sikkim assemblies expire on June 18, June 1, June 11 and May 27, respectively.
