Lakhimpur Violence: Ashish Mishra Surrenders Days After Supreme Court Rejected Bail
“Ashish has surrendered in the court. We were given a week’s time but as Monday was the last day, he surrendered a day ahead,” PTI quoted Ashish’s counsel Awadesh Singh as saying.
New Delhi: Union Minister Ajay Mishra’s son Ashish Mishra, who is an accused in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case, surrendered at a local court on Sunday.
This development took place days after the Supreme Court cancelled his bail in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case.
“Ashish has surrendered in the court. We were given a week’s time but as Monday was the last day, he surrendered a day ahead,” PTI quoted Ashish’s counsel Awadesh Singh as saying.
Ashish will be kept in a separate barrack at the jail due to security reasons, said Jail Superintendent PP Singh said.
Earlier on April 18, the Supreme Court cancelled the bail granted by the Allahabad High Court to the Union Minister’s son in the case and asked him to surrender in a week’s time.
A special bench of Chief Justice N V Ramana and Justices Surya Kant and Hima Kohli held that the High Court took into account irrelevant considerations and gave extra weightage to the contents of the FIR.
Earlier on October 3 last year, eight people were killed in Lakhimpur Kheri during violence that erupted when the farmers were protesting against Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya’s visit to the area.
Four farmers were mowed down by an SUV, in which Ashish Mishra was seated, according to the UP Police FIR. Following the incident, the driver and two BJP workers were allegedly lynched by angry farmers.
A journalist also died in the violence that triggered outrage among opposition parties and farmer groups agitating over the Centre's now-repealed agricultural reform laws.
The Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court had granted regular bail to him and opined that the present case was one of "accident by hitting with the vehicle".
