Kerala Braces For Heavy Rains; IMD Issues Yellow Alert For Multiple Districts From July 5–9

Kerala faces heavy rainfall from July 5-9 due to an active monsoon, with yellow alerts issued for several districts.

Kerala is bracing for heavy rainfall over the coming days with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing yellow alerts across several districts from July 5 to July 9. The warning comes amid an active phase of the southwest monsoon, driven by a cyclonic circulation over Gangetic West Bengal and an offshore trough extending from Maharashtra to Karnataka.

Yellow Alerts In Kerala

According to the IMD, heavy rain ranging between 7 to 11 cm in 24 hours is expected in Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod on July 5. Alerts will remain in place for Kannur and Kasaragod on July 6 and again on July 9. The yellow alert indicates the possibility of moderate to heavy showers at isolated locations, with officials urging people in vulnerable and low-lying areas to remain cautious.

In the state capital and its surroundings, the forecast suggests a generally cloudy sky with chances of one or two spells of rain or thundershowers on July 6. Alongside the rain warnings, the IMD has also predicted strong surface winds of up to 50 kmph across Kerala and Lakshadweep between July 5 and 7.

Adding to the concerns, the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has issued an advisory about unusually high tidal waves expected to hit coastal regions of Kannur and Kasaragod, reported On Manorama. The phenomenon, which may last from Saturday morning through Sunday night, has raised fears of sea incursion, prompting district authorities to advise coastal residents to avoid the shoreline and follow safety measures.

Tamil Nadu Weather Update

Isolated rainfall was recorded in Tamil Nadu, while dry weather prevailed in Puducherry and Karaikal. The forecast for Tamil Nadu suggests light to moderate showers at isolated places. In Chennai, residents may experience thunderstorms and lightning accompanied by light to moderate rain in some parts of the city.
