Kashmir Issue: NC Delegation Allowed To Meet Farooq, Omar Abdullah After Two Months
Jammu and Kashmir administration has granted permission to a National Conference (NC) delegation from its Jammu unit to meet party president Farooq Abdullah and and his son Omar Abdullah on Sunday
Srinagar: After being placed under house arrest for nearly two months, Jammu and Kashmir administration has granted permission to a National Conference (NC) delegation from its Jammu unit to meet party president Farooq Abdullah and and his son Omar Abdullah on Sunday, who are currently under protective detention in Srinagar. "The delegation led by provincial president Devender Singh Rana and comprising former party legislators will fly from Jammu tomorrow morning," National Conference spokesperson Madan Mantoo told news agency PTI. Rana had sought permission from Governor Satya Pal Malik to meet the two former chief ministers of Jammu and Kashmir.
Mantoo, after getting confirmation of the permission, said a 15-member delegation of NC leaders, all of them former legislators, will go to Srinagar on Sunday. Farooq and Omar Abdullah were placed under detention on the night of August 4, a day before the centre moved to strip Jammu and Kashmir of its special status.
While 81-year-old Farooq Abdullah is under house arrest at his Srinagar residence after being booked under the Public Safety Act, Omar has been detained at a state guest house. Speaking with the news agency, Mantoo also informed that the Jammu unit of NC took the decision to meet the party president and vice president at an emergent meeting of senior functionaries and district presidents of the Jammu region.
The meeting took place two days ago after the state administration lifted restrictions on the movement of party leaders which were too under house arrest citing security reasons. On Thursday, the administration said Kashmiri leaders in detention will be released but after analysis after an analysis of each individual.
The Abdullahs and another former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti are among more than 400 political leaders and activists put under detention since the Central government scrapped Jammu and Kashmir’s special status on August 5.
Although Jammu-based leaders have been released after the announcement of the local body polls, a similar action in the Kashmir Valley may not come soon. The adviser to the Jammu and Kashmir governor, Farooq Khan, on Thursday said that Kashmiri leaders will be released "one by one after analysis of every individual".
