Delhi: Clashes Between Two Groups Of Students In JNU, Security Beefed Up In Campus

Videos of the clash have also emerged online in which students can be seen running around the JNU campus with sticks.

A scuffle broke out between two student groups in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus on Thursday, leaving two injured. Videos of the clash have also emerged online in which students can be seen running around the campus with sticks.

News agency ANI reported that Delhi police have beefed up the security around the university campus after the incident.

A senior police official confirmed the incident, saying that a clash broke out between two students over a personal issue, following which their friends joined in the fight. Two students have sustained injuries in the clash, he added.

"We have not received any formal complaint yet in the matter. The fight was between two students and there was no political group involved. It is a matter of personal dispute between the duo. Necessary legal action will be taken as and when we receive it," the official said.

Delhi police said they received the call about a scuffle on JNU campus at around 5 PM. They were informed that students were fighting near JNU’s Narmada hostel. Police reached the spot only to know that there was a quarrel between two groups of JNU students over a personal issue which led to a fight among them.

"We received a message last night of a ruckus at Narmada hostel & a student was badly thrashed. Before that, there was a brawl at Sutlej hostel. Security office was informed but neither they nor JNU admin took steps to ensure students' security," ANI quoted Anagha Pradeep, JNUSU Councillor, as saying.

She added that when they received a message in the afternoon that a stick-carrying and tube light-wielding mob was coming there in big cars, the JNUSU president informed the Delhi Police. "JNU security has failed us time and again," she said.

Earlier in April this year, a protest was staged near Delhi police headquarters over a fight between ABVP and left-wing students.

The clash happened over serving of non-vegetarian food in the Kaveri hostel mess on Ram Navami. The police had said that six students were injured after a clash broke out.

All India Students Association (AISA) activists had then accused Delhi police of manhandling women protesters. They said, “Women protesters were manhandled, and their clothes were pulled by male security personnel. Several have been injured by the Delhi Police. We have been detained inside the Tughlaq Road Police Station.”
