Jammu & Kashmir: Students, security forces clash in Srinagar during protest over Bandipora rape case

New Delhi: As student protests continued at several places in Jammu and Kashmir in the wake of Bandipora rape case, a violent clash broke out between security forces and protesting students at Amar Singh College in Srinagar. Reports also said that massive protests erupted at Women’s college MA road against the alleged rape of a three-year-old girl in Bandipora district, of the valley. Students also took out a peaceful protest march in Srinagar’s Lal Chowk, reports said. The entire valley has been boiling with rage after a three-year-old girl of Sumbal area of Bandipora district was allegedly raped in north Kashmir last week. The incident has sparked widespread outrage in the state, prompting the Jammu and Kashmir Police to constitute a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the incident.  Governor Satya Pal Malik on Monday directed police to complete investigations in the alleged rape case on a fast track basis. The state police have arrested one person in connection with the case. The governor has also directed the Divisional Commissioner and the Inspector General of Police of Kashmir to personally monitor the investigation. During the protests on Monday, over 40 security personnel, including an officer, and seven civilians were injured as clashes broke out in the state during protests.  Youths held protests and pelted stones at security forces at several locations in Baramulla district in north Kashmir. A shutdown was also observed in Kargil town as locals took out a rally over the incident. The protesters raised slogans in support of their demand for exemplary punishment to the accused who is in police custody, the officials said.
