Lighting Of Candles To Mark 104 Years Of Jallianwala Bagh Massacre At Memorial
On the anniversary of the horrific 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre, Ludhiana MP Sanjeev Arora paid tributes to the martyrs of the tragic incident and revealed how Punjab will commemorate the day.
Ludhiana: Ludhiana MP and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjeev Arora paid tributes to the martyrs of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre on the occasion of its 104th anniversary, saying that the horrific massacre of April 13, 1919 “was a turning point in India's struggle for independence”. Punjab will commemorate the day on Thursday by lighting candles at the memorial.
“On this day, we remember the tragic event in Indian history known as the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre. On April 13, 1919, British troops fired upon a peaceful gathering of unarmed Indian civilians who had gathered at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar to protest British rule,” he said while speaking to ABP Live.
Stating how the act of violence resulted in the deaths of hundreds of men, women, and children and injuries to so many more, the parliamentarian said the Jallianwala Bagh massacre “continues to serve as a reminder of the injustices suffered by the Indian people under colonial rule”.
“As we reflect on this day, let us honour the memory of those who lost their lives and reaffirm our commitment to the values of freedom, justice, and equality for all. May we continue to work towards a world where such acts of violence and oppression are never repeated, and where all people can live in peace and dignity,” the Rajya Sabha MP added.
Speaking about how the day is being commemorated in Punjab, he said the AAP government will pay “proper homage” to the martyrs of the massacre. “Candles will be lit by local residents at the memorial site,” he added.
Asked about the controversy pertaining to the way the memorial was renovated, with many complaining that the original look was not retained, the AAP leader evaded a direct reply. “I feel on this day let us just remember the departed ones, and pray to the almighty for their souls,” he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is also the chairman of the Jallianwala Bagh National Memorial Trust, virtually inaugurated the renovated complex of Jallianwala Bagh Smarak on August 28, 2021.
