ISIS Jammu and Kashmir chief among four terrorists killed in Anantnag encounter

SRINAGAR: In a major success for counter-terrorism operation, the security forces on Friday gunned down four militants, including the head of the Islamic State Jammu and Kashmir (ISJK), in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir. The gunfight started this morning after the security forces received specific intelligence inputs about the presence of militants in the area, following which a cordon and search operation was launched. The search operation turned into a gunfight after the militants fired at the forces, who retaliated. One of the militants killed in the encounter was identified as Dawood Sofi alias Danish from Srinagar, who was heading the ISJK, an affiliate of ISIS. Other three were Majeed Manzoor from Talangam village in Pulwama district, Adil Hassan Mir and Ashraf Itoo, both from Srigufwara in Anantnag. The militants were holed up inside a house in the south Kashmir district. The house owner also came in the line of fire and was killed. His wife sustained a gunshot injury and was shifted to a hospital for treatment A policeman and a civilian were also killed in the exchange of fire between militants and security forces. Three civilians are reported to be critical. “Four militants have been killed in the encounter at Srigufwara and their bodies have been recovered,” Director General of Police (DGP) S P Vaid was quoted by PTI as saying. Earlier dozens of youth had started pelting stones at the security forces near the encounter site as the gun battle progressed. Security forces used force on the protestors and several civilians were injured. Authorities have suspended mobile Internet services in the district to check the spread of any kind of rumours. High paced anti-militancy operations are underway in the valley after the Ramzan ceasefire has been called off. Activities of militants had been on a rise ever since the government announced suspension of all operations against them for the month of Ramzan. (With inputs from agencies)
