Railway Platform Ticket Price Hiked From Rs 10 To Rs 30; Rates Increased To Discourage 'Unnecessary Travel'

The Railway Ministry issued a statement, that the price hike was a temporary measure to prevent overcrowding at the station. The Ministry said that regulation and controlling of the crowd at stations is the responsibility of the Divisional Railway Managers (DRMs).

New Delhi: Indian Railways will begin the sale of platform tickets from midnight March 6th, 2021 in Delhi which was stopped due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. However, the prices of these tickets have been raised in a move to prevent overcrowding. In Delhi, the tickets will be sold for Rs. 30 as opposed to Rs. 10 which was the earlier price. 

In some major stations around the country the prices of the platform tickets have been raised to Rs. 50. 

The Railway Ministry issued a statement, that the price hike was a temporary measure to prevent overcrowding at the station. The Ministry said that regulation and controlling of the crowd at stations is the responsibility of the Divisional Railway Managers (DRMs).

The notification read, "It is a temporary measure and field activity undertaken by the railway administration in the interest of the safety of passengers and to prevent overcrowding at stations," Ministry said in a statement according ANI.

"Deterring more persons to visit the station, the platform ticket charges are increased from time to time after assessing the ground situation. The power to change charges of platform tickets has been delegated to DRMs due to field management requirements," it added.

Indian Railways announced the slight hike in the far in February, according to the ministry it is a standard practice that the railway takes up as a short term crowd controlling measure.

Meanwhile, the Central Railway zone of Indian Railways increased the price of platform tickets for passengers at some key stations in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). In a PTI report the Central Railways’ Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Shivaji Sutar, was quoted saying that 'instead of the previous rate of Rs 10, a platform ticket now costs Rs 50 at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), Dadar and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) stations in Mumbai, as well as neighbouring Thane, Panvel, Kalyan and Bhiwandi Road stations.'
