Indian Man Partially Stripped, Brutally Attacked In Ireland; Parties Condemn ‘Racist Hate Crime’
An Indian man in his 40s was hospitalised following what has been dubbed “mindless, racist violence” in a suburb of the Irish capital of Dublin, with the Indian Ambassador to Ireland calling for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.
An Indian national in his 40s was violently attacked and partially stripped by a group of individuals in Tallaght, Dublin, on Saturday, prompting widespread outrage and an investigation by the Irish police. Photos circulating online show the victim bleeding heavily, with visible injuries to his face, arms, and legs. He was rushed to Tallaght University Hospital for medical treatment after the incident, which occurred around 6 pm on Parkhill Road. The Gardaí (Irish police) have launched a probe into the matter.
Indian Ambassador to Ireland, Akhilesh Mishra, strongly condemned the incident on social media platform X. Questioning the characterisation of the attack, he asked, “How can an ‘ALLEGED’ assault cause such horrible injury & bleeding?” He went on to express gratitude towards the Irish public and the Gardaí for their support to the injured man and urged authorities to ensure the assailants are brought to justice.
Indian Victim In Shock, Arrived In Ireland Just 3 Weeks Ago
According to a report by Irish Independent, Fine Gael councillor Baby Pereppadan, representing Tallaght South, met the victim following the attack. “He couldn’t speak much because of the shock he was in, he only arrived in Ireland three weeks ago. He is not taking any visitors at the moment,” the councillor said.
Pereppadan expressed concern about the growing frequency of such incidents in Tallaght and advocated for an increased Gardaí presence in the locality. He also appealed for public understanding, stating, “People need to understand that many Indian people moving to Ireland are here on work permits, to study and work in the healthcare sector or in IT and so on, providing critical skills.”
‘Vile, Racist’ Attack Condemned By Irish Parties
Sinn Féin TD for Dublin South-West, Seán Crowe, labelled the assault as both “violent and racist”, calling it “vile and utterly unacceptable on so many levels.”
“Anyone who thinks this sort of mindless, racist violence makes their community safer is lying and fooling no one,” he said. “Some residents are increasingly nervous to leave their homes due to this type of behaviour, regardless of whether they are new arrivals to our community or have lived here all their lives.”
The Irish Times reported that authorities are treating the attack as a possible hate crime. The publication also cited Gardaí clarifying that allegations made against the man—of inappropriate behaviour around children—were unfounded and false.
Paul Murphy, a People Before Profit TD for the area, sharply criticised the attack and those responsible for spreading misinformation. “Responsibility lies not just with those who perpetrated the violence but also with those who have been spreading racist lies. The community is really shocked and outraged and will stand together against violence, hate and division,” he said.
Justice Minister Rebuts 'People Blaming Immigrants For Crimes'
Ireland’s Minister for Justice, Jim O’Callaghan, also weighed in on the issue, noting a disturbing trend of immigrants being falsely accused. “Increasingly, you hear of people blaming immigrants for crimes,” he said.
Sharing prison statistics to debunk such claims, O’Callaghan stated, “All I can say to you is: I have asked for the statistics and when you look at the prison population of people convicted of offences, the percentage of immigrants in prison is lower than the percentage of immigrants in society.”
“So there’s no substance to the suggestion that immigrants are more likely to commit a criminal offence,” he added.
